Three generations of the Harlow family have been getting up before dawn to bake something worth coming back for. This is our story.
Maple & Grain started in 1987 when Margaret Harlow began selling sourdough loaves out of her home kitchen in South Austin. Neighbors would knock on her door before sunrise to grab a loaf before they sold out, and they always did.
Her son David took over in the early 2000s, expanded to a small storefront on South Congress, and added pastries and coffee. Now his daughter Claire leads the kitchen, bringing new ideas while keeping the recipes that made this place what it is.
Three generations, one oven philosophy: use good ingredients, take your time, and bake something you're proud to put your name on.
Our Values
No fillers, no shortcuts. We source from local Texas farms and mills whenever possible.
Good bread takes time. Our sourdoughs proof overnight. We won't rush what can't be rushed.
We've been part of this Austin community for nearly four decades. We know our regulars by name.
Unsold bread goes to local food banks and community kitchens. Nothing goes in the trash if we can help it.
